Opaque glass shade For a hanging light
Modern lighting gets bigger and brighter, but it does not necessarily get any better; one could say that we are in the dark ages as regards lighting. Very few contemporary light fittings are things of beauty – those that look good, and cast a friendly beam, tend to be based on turn-of-the-century precedent. In general, strategic small sources of light are more sympathetic than bright central fittings, though frosted-glass bowlshaped diffusers hanging from chains can shed an inoffensive overall radiance, when partnered by graceful ceramic table lamps or delicate painted candlestick lamps. As usual, simplicity fits best with a country ethos: a flotilla of candles, perhaps set out in spidery-black candle-holders or tin sconces, creates the perfect atmosphere for good conversation.
