Another source of DHA with even fewer environmental toxins is krill oil krill are little crustaceans that feed on phytoplankton and are harvested in the Antarctic. Krill oil was my most consumed omega-3 supplement during my own pregnancy, but please feel free to do further research to see if it is right for you! A large majority of our population is deficient in vitamin D and this can be disadvantageous during pregnancy. Although more research is needed, some studies have shown associations of maternal vitamin D deficiency with preterm birth, low birth weight, preecamplsia and gestational diabetes.22 In addition, since vitamin D is needed to maintain sufficient levels of calcium and phosphorus, a lack of vitamin D during pregnancy can result in abnormal fetal bone growth and fractures.23 The amount of vitamin D a pregnant women should supplement with is up for debate by many medical associations and recommendations range from 600 International Units (IU) to 4,000 International Units. According to the American Pregnancy Association, there was a recent study that concluded that daily consumption of 4,000 International Units (IU) of vitamin D by expecting women had the most benefit with regard to preventing premature labors (and births), as well as infections.
