A light whitewash on new pine paneling places the focus on the reclaimed heart-pine floors throughout the house. Other striking wood elements include exposed ceilings in the great room, which are reminiscent of a time when supports for attic floors were likely revealed to the room below. This detailing contributes to the home’s classic feel. North Carolinian Sara Switzer painted much of the artwork specifically for this house. She worked with Linda on themes, colors, and sizes. Some artists would snort at painting for a house, says Sara. “But to think about all the elements as a wholeone seems to stimulate the other.” She lives on the banks of a tidal creek and marsh, so she finds inspiration in her own backyardand her local market. For the fish paintings in the great room, Living room designs pictures she bought fresh flounder and grouper to use as still-life subjects, capturing their jewel tones.
