As you walk around, you discover plenty of “little incidents†as Ryl calls them: a seat against a wall, ITALIAN DESIGN DINING TABLE AND CHAIRS a stepping-stone path, a pond, a fountain, a swimming-pool. It’s invaluable for gardeners of all scales and budgets, as it shows how to create different effects regardless of scale. The nursery sells plants that you see in the garden, while the cart shed holds samples of paving, bricks and pots, and the pig shed houses a permanent exhibition of garden design. But don’t expect the hard sell if you visit. Ryl is determined that it should remain a garden that revolves around ideas, not retailing. “If you want just to come and enjoy wandering around a garden in a beautiful setting, you can.†Cabbages & Kings, Wilderness Farm, Wilderness Lane, Hadlow Down, East Sussex TN22 4HU, (01825) 830552.
