Jackie Chirchir’s obsession with beautiful things is evident the moment we walk into her quaint apartment in Ruaka which is layered with bursts of colour and memorabilia that she has collected over time. Jackie, who is a PR consultant at the United States International University (USIU), is also a furniture designer and her work is displayed all around the house. The living room walls are a soft and subtle shade of cream which acts as a great backdrop for the vibrant pops of colour in the room.
“I moved into this space about six months ago,” she says as she shows us around her home. “The one thing that had me sold (to the place) was the abundance of natural light,” she adds.
She is right. The natural light brings the whole space to life, from the domineering orange, L-shaped sofa which blends well with the red and black ornate carpet (a gift from her mother), to the coffee table draped with an Ankara runner. This space is filled with an aura of joy courtesy of the vibrant colours. “I initially thought of painting the walls a neutral white but I felt that it would be too much and after a while the cream pastels grew on me,” explains Jackie.
The TV stand, quite interestingly, has no TV so what is her source of entertainment? One wonders. The one thing that held us completely in awe was the feature wall which is graced effortlessly by Ankara wall hangings. This is also another great master piece by Jackie. “I can sit here for hours and just admire the wall art and sometimes it is where I like to work on my jewellery,” she adds. “A lot of time spent watching TV can be well utilised in other constructive ways;
I just don’t see the need for a TV” she explains. Throughout the home Living room with a feature wall of Ankara wall hangings. Coffee table and TV stand made by Jackie.
