Many standards form contractual or legal requirements that the designer has to satisfy, but designing to a standard or code of practice does not guarantee a building that the users see as being well lit. In fact, over-reliance on working to code without actually thinking about how the light will affect the users, architecture, and surfaces has often produced bad lighting. A good designer considers codes and standards to be minimum requirements and certainly not prescriptions for how to design: people simply do not perceive lit environments in the way that they are measured with an illuminance meter. The case study of St Machar’s Cathedral (see pages 130–9) describes the lighting design process for relighting a religious building to suit the needs of tourists and worshippers. The cathedral’s congregation is predominantly over the age of 45, so their eyesight is significantly poorer than that of the average 20-yearold, but the level of light around the pews did not cause them major concern because hymn books could be read acceptably in the existing lighting. Typical guidance would suggest a light level of at least 9 fc (100 lux) or possibly 18.5 fc (200 lux) for this function. In fact, the measured light levels at the pews varied from a maximum of 3.7 fc (40 lux) down to 1.9 fc (20 lux). The measured light levels were low and suggested a dark space, but, importantly, this was not the perception of the users of the building. The psychological experience was of a space that was naturally lit during the day and, with the existing tungsten lighting, the electric lighting had a very high color quality that largely replicated the pattern of the natural light. In short, the users did not feel the space to be dark at night.Homedesignq Several sensible recommendations #KBHomes | Home Track Lighting …
