Case study St Machar’s Cathedral, Aberdeen, UK Lighting design Malcolm Innes Design St Machar’s Cathedral is a typical example of an ancient religious building that has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. It is built on a sixth-century Celtic religious site, and the current structure is built around two fourteenth-century sandstone towers; later additions and remodeling have left an eclectic mix of architectural styles and details. The austerity of the interior, with raw sandstone walls and flagstone floor, is offset by a magnificent timber ceiling that spans the nave. Constructed in 1520, the ceiling is richly decorated with 48 heraldic shields of the kings of Europe, the pope, archbishops of Scotland, and the king of Scotland and his nobles. It is unique and the cathedral attracts high numbers of tourists every year. An outline lighting brief was given to the lighting designer by LDN Architects, the project architects. This was followed by a meeting on site to look at the building, examine the existing lighting installation, and discuss the client’s requirements. The client liked the lit effect of the existing scheme, installed around 20 years previously, but thought there could be an energy saving by upgrading the lighting equipment. The designer had researched the cathedral before the site visit, and knew the congregation aspired to be an eco-congregation and to reduce its carbon footprint. The existing lighting scheme used tungsten and tungsten halogen lamps throughout. This provided a very good quality of light, but with high running costs and short lamp life. Existing pendants used screwin 500-watt tungsten lamps with an average life of 1,000–2,000 hours. Relamping was done from the ground by volunteers who used a specialist telescopic pole. The building was not suitable for using a scaffold tower without dismantling and rebuilding it to reach every pendant position. An industrial scissor lift had been used previously, but the weight had cracked the sandstone paving of the historic building.Homedesignq Lighting Store PA – 7500 SQ FT of Lighting, Mirrors, Vanities, Fans.
