An effective lighting presentation can be produced without the use of time-consuming computer renderings and Photoshop manipulations. Sometimes a pencil, a few words, and some supporting images are all that is required to tell the whole story of a lighting proposal. This student project provides a lot of information on one easily read board. Photographs of the existing building are on the left, with the imagined reworking of the architecture shown as a sensitive hand-drawn tonal rendering on the right of the board. A set of simple hand-drawn sections describes the architectural proposition and the use of natural and artificial light within the main atrium space. This is supported by a set of thumbnail sketches that show the principle for the various lighting solutions. The package is rounded off with a summary of the design intent, and supporting images of similar lit effects from other projects. Host building (south-facing) Main staircase and stained glass window Typical warm wood Memorialization space—ramps rise through building Natural light through stained glass and interplay on ramps Concealed artificial light (warm) to enhance wood and aid journey along ramps Tonal study of memorialization space Concealed, diffused lighting underside of ramps Concealed lighting in ramp handrail Concealed, diffused soffit lighting along corridor Design intent • Existing polished wood is luminous and reflective, giving depth and richness • Psychologically evokes sense of warmth, reliability, and support • Emphasize this with warm artificial light to pick up orange/yellow undertones • Mood should be hospitable and peaceful, enabling visitors to use space as they wish • Green will complement warm wood and represents reassurance, balance, and peace • Replace existing windows with stained glass—colors to be stronger as building rises • Diffused color will change depending on time of day and season • Maintain connection with exterior, without glare or views to tenements opposite • Ramp undersides have concealed, diffused artificial lighting, to highlight walkway below 170 Process and practice Lighting mock-ups and tests There are many reasons to create physical tests of lighting proposals. It may be surprising that experienced lighting designers rely heavily on tests and mock-ups, but it is experience that has taught them to appreciate the benefits of physical testing. An observant designer knows the limitations of drawings and computer models, and how they can never totally replicate the experience of being in a lit space. Physical models can be used at all stages of a project to test or demonstrate ideas. Remarkably simple scale models (see illustrations on pages 150–1) can demonstrate the complexity of shading and inter-reflection visible in the world around us. Large-scale mock-ups can help to convince clients that the lit result is worth the effort. Full-size mock-ups can allow the whole design team to understand the tolerances required to make the lighting scheme work (see the case study of Morimoto Restaurant, on page 122). The design team can then work together to ensure that the lighting equipment can be positioned in just the right location. Physical tests and full-scale mock-ups are invaluable tools for the lighting designer and are used on projects from the smallest retail units through to the largest airports (see pages 152–3). Professional designers know that there is no substitute for a real-life lighting test. Below The interaction of light with threedimensional form can produce complex results. A sculptural surface seen in diffuse daylight can be very different from the lit effect at night. This full-scale lighting test for wall lighting at a university arts center has reversed the direction of the light in the daytime image (left) to produce a very different pattern of light and shade at night (right). A test such as this requires little more than a ladder and someone to hold the luminaire, but it can quickly identify the optimum mounting position for the luminaire. Project communication and completion 171 Left This is the final installation detail for the project opposite. This detail and the dimensions were established with the help of a full-scale mock-up. The lighting designers also used full-scale mock-ups to determine the finish to the wooden wall panels in order to avoid reflected glare.Homedesignq Janice Minor Baronet Three-Light Capiz \u0026amp; Crystal Chandelier (1,531 …
