DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) An open standard describing a protocol and electrical system for control of networked luminaires. A DALI network will consist of a controller and one or more controlled devices. DALI devices are commonly dimmers or dimmable ballast controllers for fluorescent lamps. DALI devices can provide grouped or individual control of devices. DALI is not a fast protocol and is therefore often used for lighting systems that do not require rapid changes, or where minor timing variations are noncritical, such as in office environments. diffuser A diffusing material that disperses or scatters light. Incident light can be diffused by reflective or transmissive materials. A theoretically ideal diffusely reflecting surface (known as a Lambertian surface) will produce a reflection pattern with equal intensity in all directions. A sheet of white paper is a good Glossary 185 foot-candle The unit of measurement for illuminance most commonly used in the US. 1 foot-candle = 1 lumen per square foot. high intensity discharge light source See discharge light source, and page 54. illuminance Term to describe the light that falls on a surface. We do not see illuminance—what we see is luminance (the light reflected by the surface). The light reflected will be a proportion of the illuminance. A white surface that receives the same illuminance as a black surface will reflect more light and have a greater luminance (or, in visual terms, it will appear brighter). The unit of measurement for illuminance in the US is the foot-candle. The SI unit for illuminance, used outside the US, is lux. incandescent A type of light source in which an element is heated until it glows (see page 49). infrared The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths just higher than the maximum sensitivity of the human visual system. We cannot see infrared radiation, but we do experience it as heat. isolux diagram Diagram used to display the light distribution of a luminaire (see page 65). Kelvin SI base unit of temperature. On the Kelvin scale, zero represents the point at which all thermal motion ceases. This is referred to as absolute zero as there is no lower temperature. In lighting, the Kelvin scale is used to define the apparent color temperature (see page 53).Homedesignq Bedroom lighting fixtures ceiling | Home Decor Ideas
