International Home Outlet
• 2 Tripp St. Framingham; (508) 879-9623 Don’t be put off by the fact that this store is nearly impossible to find, part of a remote industrial area, and inside a dilapidated old warehouse with boarded-up windows and peeling paint; once you walk inside, it’s another world. It’s like a Twilight Zone for interior decorators.
Two huge rooms are filled with contemporary European furniture. Suddenly, you’re looking at plush leather sofas, rosewood china cabinets elegantly lit from the inside, and classic white Scandinavian modular pieces. All are current lines, available in your choice of finishes and styles; they can be sold at significant discounts because of factory-direct connections and, well, it just don’t cost much to run such an out-of-the-way location.
Natuzzi leather from Italy is the standout name on display, with its incredibly soft couches and chairs. One model, a black sleep sofa (there’s a tongue-twister), was recently seen for a mere $873; it would be well over a thousand anywhere else. Another sofa, with a retail price of $1,199, was a perfectly good-looking floor model reduced to just $696 nearly half-price. Floor models, of course, are final sales.
The back room features Vester-gaard and Scanbirk ensembles from Denmark; spare and functional computer desks, bookcases, and platform beds. There’s an amazing variety of configurations and woods, from oak veneer to solid teak to those sleek allblack and all-white looks. A Scanbirk “Bolero†queen bed frame with two built-in nightstands, in a black and birch finish, was seen for $326, about $170 off the list price.
A further cost-cutter for the IH Outlet is its hours. It’s open only four days a week Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 12-5. Do call for directions first!
If you’re really doing your house over, the same building includes The Carpet Bagger, which offers discounted floor coverings of all kinds. Their address is 5 Tripp St. Framingham; (508) 875-9717.
