Brush on an alkyd primer tinted to match your paint color; allow to dry. Apply one or two thin coats of latex paint. SPECIAL CASES: FAUX TILED WALL Eggshell finish, off-white latex paint Eggshell finish, white latex paint (quart) Two shades of latex paint in your colors Straightedge and level Two small rollers Small paint brushes Start with a light, clean wall; paint off-white if necessary. If wall is freshly painted, allow to dry thoroughly.

Using a straightedge, level, white paint, and small brush, freehand paint the mortar lines that will divide 4× 4-inch tiles. (See page 50. ) Paint the mortar lines freehand-dont tape-to keep the effect loose and casual. For easy spacing, start at center of each wall and work out.

Using a smaller roller for each color, paint inside the mortar lines. While the paint is still wet, DINING TABLE DESIGN WOODWORKING brush over each tile,  using separate brushes for each color. Allow the painted wall to dry thoroughly.

Thin leftover off-white paint with acrylic urethane and brush over the walls for a color-washed effect.
