Brighten Dull Colors

If the paint on your walls is too flat and you want a richer effect, it’s easy to add a little zing. Apply a coat of eggshell varnish over it all. Another way to get this effect is to mix equal parts of transparent glaze with the same color paint for the second coat. High-gloss polyurethane over the painted walls will also give them luster. Test these techniques on different pieces of poster board and hang them on your wall to see how each looks. Leave them up for a few days to choose the best one.

SO Shapes, Textures, and Colors

To spruce up any area of your rooms in a quick and easy way, simply take a new look at your accessories and rearrange them in groupings by shape, size, color, and texture. It’s fun to create table-top vignettes with decorative accessories that relate to one another in this way.

Begin with an Egg

If you haven’t a clue where to begin, here’s a suggestion that always works for me. Use an ordinary egg for inspiration. It’s a wonderful shape, and eggs can be found in many shades of natural color. Create a still-life setting on a table using objects that are circular and oval in shape. Avoid anything with sharp edges, such as a box or wooden frame. Be sure all the objects are eggshell colors and arrange three or four items to make up an interesting display. These items don’t have to be related in any other way.

Use this same principle when entertaining. For example, create a dining table centerpiece. Assemble a group of fruits or vegetables in complementary shapes and colors and arrange them in a basket. Even an arrangement of different whole melons can be quite elegant. Or use eggplant, asparagus, and a variety of cabbages.
