If Gilly’s passion is fabric, Geoffrey’s is achieving a harmonious overall mise en scene. Having worked for many years with designer Tom Ellery (now at Asprey’s), he is a firm believer that rooms should grow organically and not slavishly follow fashion. He has very little time for decorators’ dictats. ‘I loathe style fascism,’ he says. ‘People mustn’t feel that they have to fall for the fashion for beige on beige.’ His own style is fluid and uncluttered. He’s not a dyed-in-the wool traditionalist, nor a hard-and-fast minimalist, Baby room pictures as is proved by the new extension to the rectory. ‘This is very Majorcan,’ he says, waving an arm at the relaxed creams and teals of the room that serves as a kitchen, dining and sitting room rolled into one.
